JASON MULLIGAN

About Jason Mulligan

Jason Mulligan was elected a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2008. He has been involved in the carving and installation of a wide variety of public art projects across Ireland, Italy, India and the U.K. His first trip to Carrara in Italy was in 1996, assisting the sculptor Paul Mason. The impression he left with regarding stone carving has stayed with him ever since and the process of carving and the use of stone as a material has remained a necessary grounding in his search for form. For the last 10 years Jason has successfully delivered high-quality artworks for both the public and private sector; artworks that continue to explore his understanding of stone while also being informative and meditative for the viewer.

Biography / CV of Jason Mulligan

Jason Mulligan is a sculptor from N.Ireland and has been based in England since 1992. He became an elected member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2008.

Jason Mulligan studied Fine Art Sculpture at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle Upon Tyne after long deliberation about wanting to become an archeologist! It was no surprise to him that he ended up being drawn into the sculpture department, where the feel of stone and the wonders of geology awaited him.

In 1994 he was fortunate to meet and work with the Japanese stone carver and ‘Henry Moore Fellow’, Hideo Furuta who was based at the University. This was an influential and educational time for Jason regarding the process of stone carving as well as underpinning his philosophy towards his work, which relies heavily on references to nature and our human experience.

His first trip to Carrara in Italy was in 1996 assisting the sculptor Paul Mason on a private commission. He then returned to England and began an intensive period of five years working as a sculptors’ assistant for the artist Hamish Horsley. It was here he had the opportunity to be involved in the carving and installation of a wide variety of public art projects across the U.K. such as `The Tibetan Peace Garden`, London, opened in 1999 by his holiness the Dalai Lama.

Jason Mulligan’s work is in private collections in France, Norway, Ireland and around the UK. He has successfully delivered high-quality artworks for both the public and private sector; artworks that continue to explore his understanding of stone while also being informative and meditative for the viewer.
Jason continues to work as a stone sculptor based on the appropriately named Quarry Farm in Kent, UK.

Artist Statement of Jason Mulligan

Jason Mulligan`s Personal Statement
For me carving allows for the exploration of abstract geometries found within the landscape. These essential structures continue to influence and inform my ideas. This relationship between form and the surface of a sculpture is often worked using texture and colour to add a further layer of information to each sculpture. Issues that currently motivate me within my work deal with the hidden landscapes, histories, actions and characters that can charge an environment.

Customer comment on 'Equilibrium (Carved Wood Modern Contemporary abstract statue statuette' by Liliya Pobornikova
Hi Peter, I am so delighted with Equilibrium, I have a collection of over 20 original paintings; but this is my first sculpture, and it pleases me more than most of my art. Please pass my thanks to Liliya, (Liliya Pobornikova in Spain) me and my friends really admire her work. And although I cannot afford the £xxxx for her Rainbow 1, I would love to own it, and would be happy to pay £xxxx. Thank you to you too Peter, especially for bearing me in mind, but also for q...
